To break out of an entrenched stereotype is not easy. Part of it involves better understanding an individuals history and background, where they came from, what they believe in, why they hold their beliefs. The following class project calls upon students to recognize stereotypes that people may associate with them and declaring why they defy that stereotype in order to help reshape our perception of individuals, alleviate judgement and get to know the individuals in our community on a deeper level. Students are asked, "What makes you unique and what do you want people to know about you."
Inspired by the the Youtube video posted by Tyler Merritt titled, "Before You Call," the freshman seminar class is working on creating their own Identity Videos Projects that will be posted on youtube.
Lesson:
Objective: Students create Identity video monologues that highlight attributes and characteristics that define them and what makes them unique. Building confidence in themselves and who they are. The aim is to break down any stereotypes that people may associate with them and help the LFA community get to understand our Freshman class, what makes them all unique and know them on a deeper level.
Steps: Students spent time writing out their script and were given tips on video filming and editing with the option to add music, titles and photographs. The students requested that their videos only be viewed by the freshmen class and LFA employees, so Jen Madeley created a shared and unlisted youtube playlist for each of her classes. Students accessed the playlist link from Canvas and will upload their final product to Youtube as unlisted and save it to their class playlist.
Stay tuned to see the entire freshman class video project as Jen Madeley releases the videos to the LFA community in installments via email.
